“So this is where you disappeared off to.”

Baisti frowned slightly at the sudden vocal intrusion on her concentration. A thunderstorm had rolled in over the plateau earlier in the day, and once the general of the Ah-Ooh army had taken the opportunity to the covered portion of her home’s rooftop just as the storm broke. She wasn’t sure how long she had been sitting out there, just listening to the rain and thunder and attempting to relax after a long and trying day. Until her houseguest had broken her concentration of course.

“I thought you had other things to do today Meter,” Baisti replied, her tone faintly irritated as she watched the Patapon diplomat take a seat in the empty chair next to her. Meter was an oddity to her; very little seemed to faze him, and from her observations over the last few weeks, trying to bully or intimidate him was about as effective as trying to stare a tree into submission.

“I did,” Meter answered, his tone level and calm as always. “I took care of my business before the storm broke. Speaking of which, why are you out here when the weather is so awful?”

“… Listening to the rain helps me relax, and today was kind of a shit day,” she replied bluntly, before nature decided to unleash a massive lightning strike annoyingly close by. While the ensuing thunderclap didn’t cause her to leap out of her seat and make her look like a fool, she did visibly flinch. She glared at Meter, fully expecting to be mocked, or at the very least be teased a bit. Instead, her knee-jerk expectations were proven wrong by the fact that Meter’s gaze was more thoughtful than anything else.

“While I can understand why one would find the sound of rainfall soothing, I don’t understand why you would want to be out and around something that you obviously dislike,” he explained, holding up his hands in a placating gesture when Baisti’s glare intensified for a moment. “I mean no offence, I’m just curious, that’s all.”

Baisti stared at him for a long moment, trying to divine any hint of deception in Meter’s gaze. Instead, all she found was respectful curiosity tinted with concern, and with this realization she felt her scowl soften a good bit. In the relatively short time that she had known him, she had come to learn that he was every bit as kind and trustworthy as he was collected and steadfast in practically any situation. Compared to dealing with painfully boring political meetings, training new recruits, running the military, and dealing with an obnoxious upstart who challenged her authority at nearly every turn, Meter’s cool and patient attitude was a very welcome relief. Plus she also did genuinely enjoy his company, even if today had originally left her in a foul mood.

She waited for the next lightning strike to pass before she spoke again, this time merely tensing slightly as the thunder rolled over the land. She let out a heavy sigh as the ominous rumble faded, forcing herself to relax back into her seat. “I guess it’s because of something stupid I did as a child, and the fact that I guess I’ve always been a bit too stubborn for my own good,” she began, still watching Meter out of the corner of her eye as she spoke. “When I was little, I used to be so scared of storms like this and my brothers used to make fun of me all the time for it. It eventually got to the point where one of them challenged me to face my fear one especially stormy night, and I was so fed up with being made fun of that I took him up on that dare.”

“And how did that work out?” Meter inquired, now a good bit more interested and amused.

“Well I wound up climbing out the nearest window and up onto the roof before anybody could stop me, and I was up there screaming and hollering at the storm for ages. Until my father came up and dragged me back inside,” she explained, a grin now working its way onto her face as she recalled the fond memories. “I was sick for a week after that, and was grounded another for another two once I recovered,” she couldn’t help chuckling at the surprised look that rose to Meter’s face as she told her story. “It was worth it though, because my idiot brothers finally shut up and left me alone.”

Meter was silent for a moment after she finished her story, amusement returning to his face as he mulled over her story and his response. “I was not expecting an answer quite like that, but it is oddly fitting, even if it didn’t quite answer my initial question,” he told her with a chuckle.

It took Baisti a moment to recall the question Meter was referring to, and when she did she couldn’t help shaking her head at her own brief lack of an attention span. “Sorry about that,” she replied. “I suppose the reason why I still stay out even when there is thunder and lightning is because I’m still too stubborn to let myself be afraid anymore. I’ve gotten more or less used to it,” she finished with a slight shrug.

“Again, fitting,” Meter commented. “You’ve struck me as the kind of woman who is strong in both her convictions and her heart, and I admire that a great deal,” he continued, his tone earnest.

Baisti couldn’t help blinking in surprise at this, before favoring him with a smile. “Thank you. I rather like how forward you’re being tonight Meter.”

Now it was Meter’s turn to look surprised, and to her satisfaction she saw a hint of color rise to his cheeks as he composed himself. “Then perhaps you would like to come inside and join me for dinner? I can assure you that I am a very capable cook,” he offered, a rather confident smile on his lips as he stood and held out a hand to her.

Baisti stared at him for a moment, considering both his verbal and silent offers, before she finally reached out and took Meter’s extended hand. “I think I really would like that.”

As the two of them retreated back indoors, both visibly relaxed now and chatting comfortably, Baisti thought that she could get used to this.
